Engaging Science and Community
Jamal Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Psychiatry Department at the University at Buffalo's (UB) Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Jamal is also a Ph.D. graduate from UB, where he obtained his degree in neuroscience with a focus on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Jamal then transitioned to a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA, where he continued his pursuit of understanding the role of various types of genetic mutations in Autism spectrum disorders, and investigated how those of African descent present unique genetic risks. He is also the former co-host of Reclaim the Bench, a podcast aimed at highlighting unsung heroes in science and medicine, while also bringing awareness to the mistreatment of communities that have been historically marginalized and exploited for biomedical discovery and notoriety.
Jamal's overarching goal is to use scientific discovery as a tool for advancing the overall well-being of underserved communities. To do so, Jamal intends to create and/or utilize large-scale genomic databases that include individuals from understudied ancestral backgrounds for studying neuropsychiatric disorders at the mechanistic and therapeutic levels. In addition, promoting the involvement of those underrepresented in science, through mentorship, program coordination, and public speaking.
